Woonsocket, Rhode Island May 26, 2007. Michael Davies (a.k.a Sundaygar Dearboy), the Bassa music genius, and the newly found icon of Liberian music rocked the house at UNIBOA’S 17th National Convention in Woonsocket, Rhode Island over the Memorial Day weekend at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites. Sundaygar who hails from #2 District, Grand Bassa County is a 35 years old man who can pass for an eighteen year old youth for his youthful and charming look. Before Sundaygar stepped on the floor, was beautiful Tina Bond, a.k.a. Yaye, whose sexy dance routine spiced up the show with lots of applause. Miss Bond danced through the concert. Some people called her the “Beauty in Red”.
When Sundaygar was introduced to this jam packed Banquet Hall, the crowd went “coco” because they couldn’t believe themselves that all the beautiful songs that have become household and party anthems among Liberians in the Diaspora come from this little man with such a wonderful voice. The popular Bassa artist was so appreciated by all the Bassa people in the house because he interpreted the lyrics of his songs in the Bassa Language before he started singing them. The crowd went crazy when he greeted the crowd with his song, “Ah la yee poen-yoo . ..” There on, it was no more a secret, the Bassa Music Icon was in the house. Almost all his songs were both sang in his native Bassa language. This must well has given a big boost to his popularity in the United States, where the population of the Bassa people is very large. The singing of Sundaygar is very special because most Liberian artists sing in English or copy songs of American artists.
Sundaygar hits the popularity chat in Liberia and abroad when he sang, “Everybody wants to become President” during the hype of the elections in Liberia in 2005. Up to today’s date, “Who take my wife” continues to be a bone-cracking dance anthem at Liberian functions.
Sundaygar performance included songs like “Who is your owner”, “come back home”, “when you wake up”, “Bay jay”, “Gba-Gba-Glee, etc. Because of popular demand, Sundaygar performed the next day at the Annual Banquet.
Sundaygar who was named Liberian Musician of the Year 2005-2006 holds a degree in Criminal Justice from AME Zion College in Liberia and is pursing further studies in Computer Science.
The final stage of Sundaygar’s appearance on stage on Saturday, was climaxed by a dance talent show of six years old little Garmonyu Dousuah, who couldn’t any longer hold back with his dance talent, but to jump on stage with the music icon and danced in sync with the music of Sundaygar. Little Garmonyu is an ace fan of Sundaygar Dearboy. He practices his dance steps with the music of the music icon. Besides listening to Sundaygar’s music, Little Garmonyu is also an “A” student at his school in East Orange, New Jersey.
On Sunday, May 27, 2007, Sundaygar joined the Bassa gospel singing group, JCCA from Pennsylvania who was there as guest choir to perform during the Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Providence, Rhode Island. The Guest Preacher at the service was the Rev. Emmett Goodridge. The congregation of the service was amazed that Sundaygar's talent also extends to gospel singing.
Everybody at the convention had wished the Bassa music icon will stay arround for more performances in other local areas, but as the saying goes, "every good things shall come to an end". Sundaygar said he shall be returning to Liberia in few days, but we all wish he has stayed much longer in the States.
